Chapter Twenty-Eight

“Are you ready?” Centurion Musset asked me quietly, staring hard at me in the darkness. We were less than a half mile from the enemy camp now and had gathered together, preparing before we started the party. The majority of the stealth-based fighters were already in place, and I felt the loss of Bane, Tang, and Yen fiercely, despite Bob’s comforting presence in my mind and by my side.

“Yes, Centurion,” I whispered back to him, and he frowned at me before turning away and starting forward.

I stifled a retort, and followed along like a good boy, well aware that in terms of skill and experience, I was one of the very few fighters that hadn’t done this kind of thing before, and my entire squad was the weakest link in the plan tonight.

Musset clearly didn’t want me here, although he was pleased with having Bane, Tang, Grizz, and Yen. He’d made no bones about letting me know that I was putting everyone else at risk with my ‘idiotic demands to play a part’. I’d asked him if he had a greater chance to succeed if I was there, and to tell me straight if having me and my squad, including the Bard’s buffs and the magic we brought to the fight, weren’t needed.

He’d just grunted and stormed off.

Now we were sneaking through the woods toward the camp of the Dark Legionnaires. For the first time, I was actually intentionally putting myself at odds with the Dark God of Death, Nimon, and I couldn’t decide if I was excited, or really, really shouldn’t have eaten that wrap with all the chilies that Grizz had offered me.

I crept closer, the firelight of the camp’s torches ahead, while the others moved slowly around me.

We reached the marker that Musset had made, a line he dragged his foot across to leave stark and clear, and we stopped as he pointed at me, and at the line firmly.

I was to wait here with my team.

Musset would lead his Legionnaires in the attack, carefully coordinated with the stealth types, and our role was to stand behind this line and throw everything we could at one tent in the middle of the camp, while the ‘real Legionnaires’ showed me how it was done.

I watched as they got ready, waiting until the guard changed, and for a signal from Musset. In the meantime, I worried over the sheer number of damn guards the Dark Wankers had at the ready, standing at attention every ten paces, ringing the entire camp.

Personally, I’d hoped that they’d be lazy fuckers, maybe only a couple of sentries on watch, not the nigh-on sixty that stood there, fully armored and ready, and I looked at Musset in question.

He stepped in very close and whispered in my ear, seemingly indignant over the fact of who I was entirely, and that the orders had, in fact, come from me originally.

“We’ve orders to take this fucking camp down, and we’re going to do it. Now, either
